Animals of Aotearoa

, ,

Animals of Aotearoa is a must-have compendium for children curious about New Zealand’s wild animals. This book is packed full of illustrations and information about our native animals, both common and rare, as well as many well-known introduced animals. The book includes land and sea birds, frogs and lizards, many kinds of fish and other marine creatures, insects and invertebrates.

This is an essential and beautiful reference book for all New Zealand kids. Children can pore over the pages on their own or read it with an adult, but with such engaging images and fun facts, this is a reference book we will all wish we’d had as a child.

Author Gillian Candler was a secondary-school teacher before moving into educational publishing with Learning Media in Wellington, where she worked on a wide range of publications for children, including books about science and the environment. She currently works as a writer and an educational publishing consultant from her home in Pukerua Bay.

Ned Barraud is an illustrator with a keen passion for the natural world. For as long as he can remember, Ned has been fascinated by the form and beauty of the insect kingdom, with some of his earliest artwork depicting beetles, shining like jewels. Ned illustrated all six books in the award-winning ‘explore & discover’ series.

The Children’s Bookshop Comments:
This compendium of New Zealand’s wild animals is beautifully produced. Its hardcover format makes it a great class reference book. The colours are gentle and subtle, reflective of real life colours around us. The illustrations are stunning and the descriptions are full of interesting facts. A fantastic resource about Aotearoa’s mammals, fish, birds, amphibians and insects.

Highly recommend this book, it is filled with loads of NZ animals that my kids ask about, ones at the rocky shore, birds they see in the garden etc. We used it recently for a school piece of writing on a NZ animal. Kids are fascinated with the insect section too and use the book to identify bugs in the garden. My girls ages 4 and 5 like it, great for kindy and primary school aged kids.
