All The Dear Little Animals

, ,

Esther was very brave. I was little and scared. One summer’s day we started a business called Funerals Ltd, to help all the poor dead animals in the world. Esther did the digging, I wrote the poems, and Esther’s little brother, Puttie, cried.

This charming, off-beat Swedish story has been translated into English by Gecko Press (Wellington). The humour is beautifully understated, revealed subtly through Esther’s bossy leadership, the boy’s eagerness to be brave and helpful in the summery pastel illustrations that depict children resolving a big issue through play.
